Why convert HEIC to JPG

iPhones and iPads have saved photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default since iOS 11 — it's roughly half the file size of an equivalent JPG at similar quality, which is great for storage on the phone. The problem shows up the moment that photo leaves the Apple ecosystem: Windows can't open it without an add-on, most websites reject the upload outright, and plenty of email clients and older software have never heard of it. JPG is the one format that's guaranteed to open everywhere.

What changes

The output is usually larger than the original HEIC, sometimes close to double — that's HEIC's better compression working in reverse, not a quality loss going the other way. There's no visible difference to the photo itself at a sensible quality setting; you're trading storage efficiency for universal compatibility.

How this actually decodes HEIC

No browser except Safari can open a HEIC file directly, so a small WASM decoder (a few megabytes) loads the moment you drop a .heic/.heif file — every other conversion on this site never downloads it. Once decoded, the photo goes through the exact same resize/export pipeline as every other format here: locally, in your browser, never uploaded anywhere.
