Why convert HEIC to PNG
Most people converting an iPhone HEIC photo want a JPG, but PNG is the better target when the photo is headed into an editor for further work — a design tool, a document, a presentation — where re-saving losslessly matters, or when you need to add a transparent background afterward. Windows, most websites, and most software still can't open HEIC at all, so converting first is required either way.
What changes
Expect a noticeably larger file than the original HEIC — PNG's lossless compression isn't built for photographic detail the way HEIC's is, so a HEIC-to-PNG conversion can run several times the original size. If file size matters more than lossless editing, HEIC to JPG is usually the better choice.
How this actually decodes HEIC
No browser except Safari can open a HEIC file directly, so a small WASM decoder (a few
megabytes) loads the moment you drop a .heic/.heif file — every
other conversion on this site never downloads it. Once decoded, the photo goes through the
exact same resize/export pipeline as every other format here: locally, in your browser,
never uploaded anywhere.
